Course Overview
Acupuncture and dry needling are commonly used interventions in physiotherapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. However, like all clinical procedures, they carry inherent risks that must be understood and managed appropriately. This course provides an evidence‑informed exploration of adverse events (AEs) associated with needling techniques, including their types, frequency, prevention, and management. Content is grounded in current research, prospective studies, and clinical case examples to support safe physiotherapy practice.
Learning Objectives
-
Identify Common Adverse Events
Recognize the range of adverse events associated with acupuncture and dry needling, from mild reactions to serious complications. -
Risk Minimization Strategies
Learn practical approaches to reduce the likelihood of trauma or injury related to needling interventions. -
Confidence in Patient Communication
Develop confidence in discussing potential risks and safety considerations with patients prior to treatment.
Relevance to Clinical Practice
Physiotherapists and rehabilitation practitioners frequently integrate needling techniques into clinical management of musculoskeletal conditions. Understanding the nature, frequency, and prevention of adverse events enables clinicians to:
-
Provide safer care
-
Make informed decisions about treatment appropriateness
-
Improve patient education and consent
-
Strengthen risk management in clinical settings
Most adverse events related to acupuncture and dry needling are preventable or manageable with proper technique and informed clinical judgment.

This course is designed for rehabilitation professionals who may encounter or use acupuncture or dry needling in practice, including but not limited to:
-
Physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants
-
Occupational therapists and assistants
