The other consideration when selecting a space to record in is the reverberance of the room.

Large, open rooms where noises have room to echo are a poor choice to record in. Smaller spaces usually deaden echo, but there is an easy way to test for this. Simply clap once where you are hoping to record and listen for an echo. Unless you are in a massive space, the echo resulting from this test will likely be quiet and come shortly after your initial clap, so you might want to try this a couple of times to be sure.

Below are two images of rooms, the first (left) is a large open space with a high ceiling and little furniture; the echo in this room is likely quite bad. The second image (right) is of a small office space; there would likely be very little echo in this space.
